Calico by Gaurang was astounding on day 3 of LFW Spring Summer 2016

Textile day at LFW Spring Summer 2016 saw Gaurang present his latest collection Calico to the fashion enthusiasts and it certainly was eye catching. Indian fabric like Jamdani was presented in western wear and international silhouettes. Vintage styles have been repeated which looks fresh from the regular fashion. The colours, the golden borders that you see in a saari were beautifully designed into evening wear gowns. Saaris were also presented in unusual drapes.

Calico is homage to the traditional textile from the 11th century. The collection is a juxtapose of traditional Jamdani weaving tailored to silhouettes from the royal India in 1920s. Each ensemble is woven in the signature Jamdani weaving technique that takes 8-10 months to weave.

Gaurang has used various textures in Khadi like Muga, Tussar , Dupion , Silk to create these dresses. The theme being the Tree of Life. Calico is a manifestation of the Jamdani weave in an international flavour.

Moreover, I was impressed to see a pregnant Carol Gracias on the ramp. The designer has broken the taboo that expecting mothers cannot work in the modeling industry. She looked elegant and did justice to her job. More power to such initiatives.

Talking about his latest collection, Gaurang says, “Calico is iconic weaves and techniques in all their unfettered glory. Calico emphasizes the rich and vibrant history of Indian craftsmanship while championing the Indian woman of today.”

“Each ensemble from this collection is crafted from exquisite handwoven textiles in Khadi, Uppada and Kota using the Jamdani technique,” said the designer. Declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, the Jamdani is a singularly striking weave that has created an impact across the centuries. The patterns are woven with a non-structural weft resulting in vibrant patterns that dance across the fabric. I am glad that the Hyderbad based designer is using Indian weaving techniques like Jamdani and Chikankari to promote our artisans and create value for our designs.
